How email consent is collected:
At SPSS Australia all response forms used to collect information from customers or prospects which include an email field also include an OPT-IN statement similar to the following:

Are you happy to receive future marketing materials via email?

If this form is online the yes/no fields are, by default, unchecked.  Respondents who OPT-IN may receive targeted marketing materials via email. Hardcopy forms also require OPT-IN to be checked.

If an email address is provided but they do not OPT-IN the email address will only be used for the activity they are responding to. 

Email addresses which are kept on our database for future use are tagged as either YES or NO to email and used accordingly.  A comment is also added to our database and linked to the email address consent, detailing the method and the date that the OPT-IN was received. 

Contacts can OPT-OUT at anytime by contacting SPSS or providing an OPT-OUT request via a subsequent form.
