CART is the tool Salford Systems used to win the KDDCup 2000 data mining/web mining competition. The module, based on the original proprietary source code developed by UC Berkeley researchers Leo Breiman and Charles Ohlsen, includes a broad range of tree growing, 11 pruning and tree shaping controls. Salford Systems CART is blazingly fast and easily handles data mining tasks with thousands of columns and hundreds of thousands of rows. Results are displayed using classic Clementine reporting and Salford Systems interactive tree visualization.
Some people think of MARS as step wise regression (linear or logistic) finally done right. MARS is certainly a regression tool, but it also automatically selects variables, handles missing values, performs non-linear transformations of inputs and detects interactions of any degree. Using ultra-high speed algorithms, MARS typically tests millions of regressions in the search for the optimal response model. Graphs displaying the nonlinear transforms for each important predictors are part of the analytical results. MARS was developed by Jerome Friedman a few years after he completed work on CART.
